EUVS Collection

Sloppy Joe's --Short Biography M R. Jo~e Abeal (Sloppy Joe) came from Spain to Cuba in the year 1904 and went to work as bartender on Galiano and Zanja Sts. Havana, where he worked for three years, and them, he gave up his job and sailed for New-Orleans, La. (U. S. A.) In this City he went on working as ·bartender for six years. From New-Orleans he went to Miami, Fla., and also w o r k e d in different Bars during a~d other six years.

N the year 1918 he re– turned to Havana and got a job as bartened at a Cafe named "Greasy Spoon" and six months after, he decided to go in business for himself and bought what was them an insignificant grocery store at the same corner now occupied by the famous Sloppy Joe's Bar. W H I L E operating this

small grocery store, he was visited by several of his old friends from the States. It so happened, that while some of them were visiting him and . seeing the poor appear– ance and filthy looking condition of the place, one of them said.

;, Why, Joe, this place is certainly sloppy, look at the filthy water running from under the counter'.' • F ROM here on, the name Sloppy Joe stuck to Jose Abeal as part of his own life and was destined to m2ke him and his busi– ness famous and inter– nationally known.

Why is Sloppy Joe's Bar -Famous and Internationally Known? I N the first place, because Joe made it a rule in his business always to give the best for the money. He never cared to handle any product that was not genuine, and always tried to serve his customers with whdever they want. ed at the most reasonable prices. In order to fulfill this purpose, i._ • ~ h0red to have his Bar'st.r·~•1ied with all the best lfq'uc~w h e r e v e r produced, r egardless of the cost, -as long as he could meet the demands of his clients r.:iri piease the~-
