Wines of Austria.

In others, where the growths are of equal repute, as Lesbos, Naxos, and Santorin — the Thera of the ancients — the rocks are of volcanic origin. The variety of climate, and choice exposures which the elevated ground presents, serve to diversify, to an infinite degree, the quality of the wines obtained/’ The wines of Santorin are excellent for keeping, and improve with age; those of Visanto, Lachrymse Christi, are sweet and luscious. St. Elie is a dry pale wine ; while Thera, red and white Mont Hymet, and others, are worthy of attention as good honest wines. Of the wines of Austria, the best generally known are those of Steinberg and Voslauer, near Vienna. The excellent character of this wine is shown by the fact that large quantities were shipped on board the frigate “ Novara,” in her cruise round the world, which occupied two and a half years, and on her return, the remainder (300 bottles) was found to have much improved, in spite of the many changes of climate it had undergone. There are three varieties of this wine — red, white, sparkling.
