Refrigeration, th e name applied t o th e opera- tion of cooling. Th e use of ice in this and other countries i s becoming one of the necessaries of life ; its uses i n th e preservation of articles of food, cooling of liquors, &c, and fo r medical an d other purposes, ar e to o well known t o demand much introduction. An excellent mode of preserving ice for domestic use i s by the refrigerator (o r portable ice-chest); the possession of a good refrigerator, a s regards the amount of comfort and luxury it brings, cannot be over-estimated ; for icing wines and bever- ages i t ha s a special advantage, th e temperature can be adjusted a t pleasure, while the contents ar e not wasted o r spoiled.
