Madeira. 31 Lobos, on the south of the island. Old Sherry and old Madeira rank very high as perfect wines. They ought to be destitute of acidity and astringency, but stimulating and nourishing, these qualities being so nicely proportioned that the spirit they contain assists their digestion. It is principally on these grounds that they constitute an excellent beverage for the dyspeptic, the sedentary, and the invalid generally. It is of this class of wines, especially of Canary, that Howell spoke more than two and a half centuries ago : " If of any others may be verified the merry induction that good wine maketh good blood, good blood causeth good humours, good humours cause good thoughts, good thoughts bring forth good works, good works carry a man to heaven : ergo, good wine carries a man to heaven. If this be true, more English go to heaven than any other, for I think there is more Canary brought to England than the world besides." Marsala resembles Madeira in colour, and some- what in flavour. It is a sound, useful, and reason- able wine, made in the Island of Sicily. It was originally produced at Bronte, on an estate which belonged to Lord Nelson.
