S81. Solferino Coloring.

Take 1 ounce solferino.

1 gallon alcokol(95 per cent.) Butthem in a hottle, shake well,and in 24 hours it will be ready for use.

S83. Caramel.

Take 7pounds loaf sugar-. 1 pint water.

Crush and dissolve the sugar in the water; boil it in a 5-gaIlon copper kettle, stin-ing occasionally, until it gets bro-wn; when it begins to bui-n, reduce the fire; let it burn until the smoke becomes offensive to the eyes; then try it by dipping a rod into it, and letting a few drops fall into a glass of cold water; if it settles at the bottom and ciystaJlizes, so that it will crack,it is done. Upien take about half gallon luke-warm water, and pom- it in by degi-ees,stin-ing allthetime. Whenthoroughly mixed, filter it while hot thi-ough a coarse flannel filter.

283. Tincture of Orange Peel-

Take 1 pound dried orange peel(ground.) 1 gallon sph-its(95 jrer cent.) Place them in a closely corked vesselfor 10 days. Strain and bottle for use.
