The wines of Moselle, many of which are shipped as sparkling wines, occupy only a secondary position although in favorable seasons they are characterized by a pleasant flavor, much resembling those of the Rhine, with a marked aroma, hut they are light and acid. The Grunherg wines of northern Germany are very acid. Australia now astonishes the hest French judges by the excellence of her wines, and the Cape of Good Hope continues to luscious Constantia and other growths of fine quality wine. In our own country rapid progress is heing made in the cultivation of many varieties of the vine, and American wines are generally and steadily taking the place of the foreign product,among the middle classes at least.
