At the head of a glorious list of the still wines of France undoubtedly must stand the beatific Growths that come out of the ' departement' of the Gironde, where the old city of Bordeaux wields her sceptre. Thence come the magnificent ' Classed Growths' of the Medoc Clarets, beloved of the connoisseur, the Vins de Graves, red and white, the Sauternes, the St. Emilions, and the especial Pomerols. We will deal with each of these in turn, that you may know some thing of their individual characteristics, and of their classifications.
