PORT

The district producing Port Wine commences about 30 miles inland from Oporto and extends to the Spanish frontier. The vineyards are planted on specially laid out terraces along the steep hillsides of the valley of the river Douro. Port Wine is grown and made in a specified district called the Douro, must test at least 18° (Gay Lussac), and must be shipped from Oporto. As in every wine growing country, the crop varies every year. Nevertheless the production of Port Wine for the last ten years averages almost ten million gallons a year. England imports about half the yearly production. The Standard gauge of a pipe of Porto Wine is 115 gallons or 522 litres or 690 bottles. Madeira Island, about 400 miles from the Portuguese coast, produces very excellent but heavy wine, a fairly dry kind and a very sweet one. Long sea voyages,— it is still said,— are necessary greatly to improve that famous product. MADEIRA
