The Prix du Jockey Club or French Derby was first run at Chantilly, and was won by a horse named " Frank" owned by Lord Henry Seymour, the famous dandy, known In history as " Milord TArsouille ". To the five classic races mentioned above the Prix de I'Arc de Triomphe was added in 1920. Auteuil (Paris), the most beautifully laid out steeplechase course, exists since 1873. The best known of the many events run there are the Grand Steeple-Chase (6,500 metres), the Grande Course de Hales and the Prix des Drags, which are run respectively on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday of the Grande Semaine at the end of June. The Importation of a thoroughbred into America dates back to 1730 and the first races were held in South Carolina in 1734. A genealogical register, " Stud Book," for the keeping of records, became an established custom as early as 1829. Horse races are popular In most States. The principal events, like the Kentucky Derby and Oaks, are run in Louisville, Ky.
