1937 Liquid Gems a book of Drinks for the Fastiduous Drinker
Concluding Now that you have read "Liquid Gems," no doubt you consider it naive in spots, and also inadequate. And I do, too. There were many things I wanted to say about wines and liquors which had no part in the drinks listed and there fore had to be left out. 1 wanted to talk to you about Russian Vodka, the Argentine Cana and Aquavit, the Norwegian potato brandy. 1 was as eager as the cork in a Champagne bottle to pop off about the characteristics of Tequila, the Mexican liquor made from cactus, Scandinavian Brandevin and Cajas from Brazil. But most of all, 1 wanted to breathe in your ear subtle secrets of the vineyards on the banks of the Rhine, the home of the fermented grapes glorified in the poetry of Goethe and Heine. These and many more things 1 wanted to consider with you, but the limits of this booklet, and a certain reticence, did not permit of it. As to the merits of my recipes, the final judgment is dictated by your own taste. 1 therefore raise my glass and propose a toast to"Liquid Gems." J. R. 1.
