No. 544. A Cure for Salt Rheum or Scurvy,
Take of the pokeweed, any time in summer; pound it, press out the juice, and strain it into a pewter di^h. Set it in the sun till it becomes a salve, then put it into an earthen mug. Add to it fresh water and beeswax sufficient to make an oint- ment of common consistence. Simmer the whole over a fire till thoroughly mixed. When cold, rub the parts affected. The patient will almost imme- diately experience its good effects, and the most obstinate cases will be cured in three or four months. ^.B. — The juice of the ripe berries may be pre- pared in the same way. No. 545. Cough-Syrup. Put 1 quart of hoarhound to 1 quart of water, and boil it down to a pint ; add 2 or 3 sticks of liquorice and a tablespoonful of essence of lemon. Dose. — Take a tablespoonful of the syrup three times a day, or as often as the cough may be trouble- some.
