I remember once, many years ago, we were dining in a most fashionable restaurant and my host ordered a most expensive bottle of Claret. Although we were only four in party,the wine waiter placed five glasses on our table. A little later we spied him crossing the restaurant floor, swinging our cherished bottle like an Indian club. Then, having arrived at our table, he forced home a corkscrew and, tensing his biceps, he heaved at the cork as though he were the bow oarsman in a boat-race.
