1936 Shaking in the 60's by Eddie Clarke

Before we leave Burgundy, a summing up of recent vintages would not be out of place. 1953 Very good indeed. 1954 No good. 1955 Very good. 1956 No good. 1957 Not so sure that this was as good as some would have it. 1958 No good for the reds, but some very attractive white wines were made. 1959 This was heralded as the year ofthe century, though it was not quite that. A year of much sunshine, but all growers had difficulty with the vinification due to the high sugar contentofthe grapes and unusually high rate offermentation. However,it is a very good vintage in both red and white, with Bonnes Mares worth a special mention in the former. 1960 Few wines ofany merit. 1961 A very fine year indeed throughout for Burgundy. Clos de Vougeot and Bonnes Mares from the north take the eye and some very attractive wines from lower down. Fleurie is showing very well and some of the regional Beaujolais will be remembered.
