Jura Wines It would seem thatone could writeon the winesofFrance for ever;for instance,in and around the foothills oftheJura mountains some interesting wines are produced. The red and white wines ofArbois are well worth drinking, though the wine that has the greatest fascination from these parts is Chateau Chalon. The harvest rarely takes place before the first frosts (a nightmare for growers in more northern vineyards)and the bottling takes place after the wine has been in cask for some six years!A very "heady" dry golden wine this, which will keep in bottle for more than the proverbial three score years and ten! Hock Some ofthe finest ofthese popular wines from Germany are produced in the Rheingau district, around Rudesheim, Hochheim,Johannisberg and Rauenthal on the right fork of the River Rhine from Mainz. Lower south, the river forks right then left. The left arm becomes the Nahe on whose banksthe light, fresh wines ofNiederhausen, Kreuznach and Bockelheimer are to be found. The Palatinates, from the most southerly ofthe German districts, are delicious full wines. Those of Deidesheim, Kallstadt, Ruppertsberg, Ungstein and Wachenheimer are very famous. A word on "Liebfraumilch"; it has become a very popular choice in the United Kingdom. It was originally a white wine from a particular vineyard, but is now no more than a popular namefor an inexpensive wine ofno specified district. Prices range from los. fid. to 20s. a bottle and one
