WINES

The poets pour wine;and when 'tis new all decry it. But once let it be old, every trider must try it. In Vino Veritas. Most wines are made from the grape and these are the ones that most concern us. Most students of wine agree that the wine grapes were moved westward from Persia and up from Egypt by the early Greeks and Romans. All the countries bordering the Mediterranean and north to the Baltic and the North seas made wines and trafficked in them before Christ's time. Epicurus mentioned them in his time and he was very fond of anything he liked. French Clarets and Burgundies are the finest in'the world. Their Sauternes also excel. Connoisseurs everywhere agree on this.France also produces more wine and Frenchmen drink more wine than any other country or countrymen. They drink about 50 times as much wine per capita as is drunk in the U.S.A. When a label says Bordeau Vieux, you are handling a good wine. When it says Chateau, it is better, when it reads M.D.C.(Mise du Chateau)— it is their best. Italian Red and white wines are second only to France and run France a close second in consumption. Probably the best Italian wines are the Red and White Chiantis made in Tuscany but imitated all over Italy and in other countries and are designated Tipo (Type). Marsalla, made in Sicily, is a very good sweet wine something like sweet Sherry. Aboccato means sweet, Vec- chio means old, Secco means dry. Barbera is a great table wine from the Pedemont district and Barola a table wine with a bouquet like fresh violets.
