GENERAL INFORMATION

White Wines

English fetish to leave White Wines too long

before drinking. Better young and fresh. Alsace Came to the fore in this country after the war because of dearth of good Hocks and Moselles. Best years, 1945, 1947 and 1949. 1945 the biggest. 1949 the most attractive. Moselle Light flavoury, delicate. Must drink young. Best years 1945, 1949. Some very attractive 1948's were made, though an unfashionable year. 1949 bigger and better known. Hock As above. Better than Moselle, will keep longer. The year 1949 almost on a par with the supremely good year of 1921. Champagne Too many Vintage years of late. 1941, 1942. 1943, 1945 and 1947. The latter looks like being the best of the lot, fuller than most. Not yet shipped to this country but coming durmg this year. Strongly advise laying down for the future. Claret Best years 1934 and 1937, both scarce but excellent— the latter inclined to hardness, yet 1938, 1943 and 1944 very attractive wines were made, but unfashionable. 1945 and 1947 best known—lovely wines. 1945 big—not nearly ready. 1947 very forward, some already drinkable. Use before 1945. Burgundy Of recent years, 1942 not well known but lovely wines made. Drink now. 1945 and 1947 both excellent. 1945 big and unready. 1947 very forward and drinkable now. Port Wines of the war years were not shipped or bottled in this country because of the lack of shipping space. Several good Vintage wines bottled in Oporto, notably these: — Graham 1942 and 1943. Taylor 1935, late bottled 1942. Taylor 1940. Rebello Valente 1942. Ouinta do Noval 1941 and 1942. Acknowledgment to Justerini & Brooks (London)
