ADVICE TO FEMALES

ON THE SUBJECT OF TEMPERANCE

M y FAIR FRIENDS,

Permit me to draw your attention to many of the practices of intemperance which are connected with

the habits and influence of the female sex. Funerals, which ought to beget solemnity of mind, are often seasons of excess and women- are often the principal actors on these occasions. You meet the attendants at the door with hot ale, and during their stay you are incessantly serving it round. Many, by your services in this way, are seen drunk, as they fol– low the corpse to the grave and finish the day, on so solemn an occasion, with riot and disorder-even the laying out of a corpse is often accompanied with an intoxicating glass.
