Pour into a large saucepan: 2 bottles ofstrong old ale I pint of white wine 1 teaspoonful nutmeg 2 teaspoonfuls of mixed spices

Lambs' Wool (party drink)

Mix well together and addenough brown sugar to sweeten. Prepare separately and roast, 6 crab apples, cored, sugared and spiced. Heat the ale mixture slowly and stir well. When it is almost boiling add the roasted apples. Let it simmerfor afew moments and serve in wide mugs.

These drinks should be mixed and served in sturdy cups. Per person: cut spiral of orange peel and dip it in rum to moisten and dust with brown sugar. Place the peel in a cup and add 6cloves prepared with rum and sugar in the same way. Place the cup on a hot stove and when the contents are quite hot set them aflame. Allow to burn until the edges ofthe peel start to brown and the sugar to caramel. Blow out theflame and take cup off the stove. Add 2 measures ofrum andflll the cup with boiling water, give a stir, and serve with a piece ofbutter about the size ofa hazelnut floating on the drink.
