1936 Shaking in the 60's by Eddie Clarke
Bordeaux
One outstanding feature ofthe vineyards ofBordeaux is the extreme variety ofthe wine produced. Equally famous for its whitesand reds, this area can cope with all tastes. The classification ofthe wines ofthe Medoc that was drawn up in 1855 has never seriously been challenged, though if it were to be revised today, some obvious changes would be made, to wit, the great Chateau Mouton-Rothschild. This wine would surely be upgraded from a second to first growth and join the illustrious Lafite,Latour and Margaux in the first growth section. In an effort to get this classifica tion into perspective, one should realise that it is only since 1855 that some ofthe Chateaux have produced consistently good wines that would warrant them being upgraded;there are a few that have only come into prominence during the last twenty years. Whichever side one takes, for alteration or not, it must be generally assumed that the original drafters were "there or thereabouts", though there would be no rhyme or reason why the fine wines of Pomerol, St. Emilion, etc., should not come into any new classification.
