shipper. "Estate" or "German Bottling" is quite common and the former are usually very fine wines. As with Hock, some sparkling wines are made, but have no claim to greatness.
Alsace Thevineyardsextend over the eastern slopes oftheVosges Mountains,facing the Rhine and Germany. They produce mostly white wines, not unlike Hock and Moselle. They are usually sold under the name ofthe vine plant, followed by the shipper or the place of production. The principal wines are: Sylvaner Light and fresh of pale green colour, these are for drinking young. Riesling Dry with usually a beautiful bouquet. Traminer Dry and full-bodied with a very pro nounced bouquet. Gewurztra- Very fine fruity wines with an elegant miner flavour. Muscat Rather dry wines and not to be confused with thesweet MascatsofSouthern France. The 1959's were rich and full-flavoured and over shadowed the 1960's which were, none-the-less, good com mercial wines. The 1961 vintage produced wines that were generally much drier than the 1959's,butisa verygood year. Cyp rus One ofthe great differences between the table wines of theIsland and thoseofNorthern Europeis,undoubtedly,the aleoholie strength. The red wines of Cyprus are seldom below thirteen degrees which would be high, for say, a
