French Burgundy.Just the thing for local taste and strongly flavoured food. No doubt, as export trade increases (do not conclude from this that Cyprus is a new wine producing country), lighter and smoother wines will be developed. The majority of the white wines are dry, with plenty of body. "Commandaria" is probably the best known of the dessert wines, it is made from a mixture ofroughly go per cent red and io per cent white grapes. There is little or no variation in vintages of Cyprus wines; if a wine, of, say. Vintage 1951 pleased you, it is almost certain that any other vintage would be its equivalent. Italy Producing red, white and ros6 wines, this is one ofthe largest wine growing countries in the world. In the main, they are quite ordinary wines. Interesting wines are pro duced on the group of Islands north of Sicily, and one, worthy of mention, is Malvasia; a natural sweet dessert wine from Lipari. Through the kindness ofa frequenter to this island,the writer has had several bottles. It is intriguing but unfortunately, from a commercial point of view, the alcoholic content ofthe wine can vary greatly from year to year. At its highest, it would have to bear a proportionate rate ofimport duty into England which, for an unknown wine, makes it rather expensive.
