~ jf oreb.lorb .......................................................... '7{ T is a tragic fact indeed but ~ cocktail mixing in the United States is a lost art. Since the advent of prohibition experienced (and wise) bartend– ers have left for sunnier climes, leaving drink mixing in the hands of ignorant speakeasy proprietors and amateur home mixers whose idea of a cocktail is some orange juice and gin thrown together in a shaker. Is it ' any wonder that stomach special– ists have reaped a harvest when they have not only poor liquors but atrocious mixers both work– ing for them? For this reason I have dedicated my 1929 Edition [5]

of "Here's How" to the delicate art of drink mixing in· the hope of renewing an interest in a lost art and in that way doing my bit toward alleviating the suffering of mankind both legislative and physical. , To start off with, anyone wishing to mix real cocktai ls should have the following in– gredients in his home : Gordon water, Scotch, Rye, Brandy, Ab– sinthe, French Vermouth, Italian Vermouth, Angostura Bitters, Orange Bitters, Orange Syrup (which is a substitute for Cura– ~ao ), Creme de Cocoa and Gren– adine. The last seven items may be procured in almost any high grade grocery store. In using "a dash" of Bitters, [ 6]

remember that it is about one– third of a teaspoonful.' This edition has been divided, for the convenience of our little readers, into sections according to the different base liquors, so that anyone with nothing but gin in the house, for example, may look under that department and not have to go through the whole book. I wish to thank my friends for suggesting some of the new mix– tures contained in these pages and also for trying out some that were not used! I trust that they are still in good health. ~~er- [ 7]
